Garth Brooks admitted that he “never felt like a songwriter” until he heard a jaw-dropping cover of one of his songs, performed by award-winning country artist Luke Combs.

Combs delivered a rendition of “The Beaches of Cheyenne,” a 1990s track by Brooks. The “Friends In Low Places” icon wrote the song with Bryan Kennedy and Dan Roberts. Brooks was honored at the annual Nashville Songwriter Awards, hosted by the Nashville Songwriters Association International on Tuesday (September 20) at the historic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee.

“I never felt like a songwriter until tonight when [Luke Combs] sang the sh$@t out of Beaches of Cheyenne!” Brooks wrote in a tweet on Tuesday night. “Thank you [Nashville Songwriters Association International] for yet another unforgettable moment in my life and career!! love, g”

Brooks earned the Kris Kristofferson Lifetime Achievement Award. Other honorees of the evening included Songwriter-Artist of the Decade Taylor Swift and Songwriter of the Decade Ashley Gorley. Combs performed, along with Jordan Davis, Little Big Town, Parmalee and Alana Springsteen, to name a few.
